What is sea scouts?
In 1910, Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Boy Scouts, created Sea Scouts to serve as an extension of Scout training. Young men would develop personal character—pluck, patriotism, and intelligent discipline—through a sense of duty. By teaching boat management and seamanship, young men would also gain individual knowledge to help them become self-supporting. Sea Scouts performing coast guard duties, lifesaving and salvage at wrecks would also perform invaluable community service. Baden-Powell’s belief that Sea Scouts would combine the best attributes of seamanship with training in character was shared by the Boy Scouts of America. Two years after the Boy Scouts of America was born, Sea Scouts was organised in the United States with the aid of the Secretary of the Navy in 1912. (From the Sea Scout Manual)
Sea Scouts is a B.S.A program for boys and girls 14-21. While engaged in this program, a Sea Scout will learn about everything from management and leadership to navigation and knot-tying, and, most importantly, the basics of sailing. Other exciting opportunities present themselves, such as going to Sea Base in Florida, sailing on the U.S.S. Barque Eagle, or participating in rigorous SEAL training. Overall, a Sea Scout learns important life lessons, makes friends, and becomes skilled in most things maritime.

WHAT is Ship 103, 'Stalwart'?
We're a small ship located in Williamsburg, Virginia. We meet at the Williamsburg Methodist Church every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 in the winters, and participate in weekly sailing races on the York River (from the York River Yacht Haven in Gloucester) from April to November, weather permitting. We regularly participate in community events and fun activities. For instance, several members of our ship helped out at a Scouting University Event in early January, earning 8 hours of service hours towards their Ordinary rank. Four Scouts acted as Colour Guard for a Changing of the Watch ceremony in the Coast Guard Auxiliaries. Also, during the summer months when school is out, we go on several short weekend sailing trips and a few week-long cruises. Opportunities regularly come up for Sea Scouts to participate in local races as well. Last August, several Sea Scouts helped crew a boat during the Southern Bay Race Week in Hampton, Virginia.
